Our biggest competitive win and well deserved!

On March 1st, nearing the end of the season, Burnbridge secured another win on the road at Minehead. After a great result the weekend before against Portishead, the girls went back to back for the first in a while.

It started as an uphill battle as we had no subs and had to make adjustments to the starting eleven. During the team talk prior to the game, all I asked was for the girls to put in the same effort as we did against Portishead and if we did that then I could easily have seen us putting 7 past them, safe to say they went above and beyond that...

We started off in our trusted 4-1-4-1, with Lexie moving back into centre mid to couple up with Harli and Elsie starting on the left side, still settling into her new position and Leila back into the starting eleven on the right wing. The back 4 of Frank, Lil, Rox and Vi started together for the first time ever, with Mills just ahead of them. Rounding off the team with Kaycie starting as a solo striker. During the second half, we switched to a 4-4-2 and it worked perfectly (even if I do say so myself). With Lex switching to left and Elsie joining Kaycie upfront. What did stay the same was the girls effort and their performance in which I cannot fault any of them... at the end of the game Josh and I made it clear to the girls how difficult it was to choose a 'Slay'er of the game as each one of them deserved it...

To start off Summer had a faultless game in goal, she stayed alert throughout the game and was great at coming off her line. The two goals were difficult to deal with, their freekick was amazing and she couldn't have done anything about and the second goal we simply just didn't clear our lines. Minehead didn't have many chances but any chances they did have Summer quickly put an end to them. It was a different sort of game for Summer as she wasn't as busy as usual but still a great game for different reasons as staying focused while not being as busy is testing for most keepers and Summer smashed it.

Frankie continued her great form at left back this game. Improving more and more especially positionally. Her tackling and battling throughout the game was great. My favourite thing from Frank this game was her through balls to the left winger, whether it was Lex or Els. Usually she hesitates and puts it out for a throw but today, she always looked up and started a few attacks which was very good to see.

Lily took lead in the defence again and was a standout performer. Her communication and leadership helped the other 3 defenders massively, especially when it was their first time playing alongside each other for the full 80. The line was faultless and that was all due to Lil, as well as her clearances that were very much needed at times.

Mills had a cracking game in midfield, from being put into defensive mid just before the game starts to then being moved up to centre mid in the second half to then going back to sitting in front of the defence to see the game off. In both positions, she did not stop working which makes a great captain. She kept her cool this weekend as well which is always good to see (and I'm sure Kel appreciates not forking out another £12 hahaha ). But seriously she played another great game and I couldn't have asked for more, a lot like everyone else today.

Harli started in centre mid for the second week in a row and did not disappoint, she partnered Mills perfectly and both did exactly what I asked for. She battled hard like usual and ran the midfield, her forward runs were exceptional, now all we need is for her to score (we are all routing for this to happen, and cannot wait to celebrate when she does get that goal as its definitely coming)!

Lexie had a tough game psychologically today, being put into centre mid was definitely not ideal for her but she did it for the team, showing what a great team player she is. She earned a goal from centre mid, showing off her energy and determination to run through the defence and finished it off well. Lex then doubled her tally in the second half after being moved on to the left for the first time this season, and could have a serious future in that position when we need her. She put all of our nerves at ease by making the score 4-2 and putting us back into a comfortable position. A really exceptional game from Lex today and could have easily won 'Slay'er of the Game.

Leila was an ever-present threat on the right hand side as per usual. It took her time to get used to a very short pitch but what worked really well was her being there for the ball to feet, Mills especially done very well with finding her. Once she got the ball she ran past any defender that went near her and excelled.

Kaycie as I explained to her today done everything I asked for. She put pressure on any defender that had the ball, causing them to lose the ball countless times. Kaycie chased up any shot on goal and could've easily pinched a few goals. Eventually she got the goal she deserved by being at the right place at the right time and sealing the 3 points on a lovely morning.

But the players who got the awards were the two who also won them last weekend, through no coincidence at all. These two are playing the best football they ever have at the moment and have thoroughly deserved the awards both weeks...

Roxy won the vote of Players 'Slay'er of the Game. Her goal is easily a Goal of the Season contender, I think she even surprised herself. But honestly I was even more impressed with her defensive capabilities today. She made countless crucial tackles, stopping Minehead from having several shots on goal and was always there when we needed her. Her strength to get the attackers of the ball worked effortlessly and was great to see her in action today.

Our 'Slay'er of the Match went to Els. Giving the award to the player who scores 4 goals seems like a cop out to most but genuinely her energy, effort and fight to continue playing on was incredible. She was given a penalty after being taken out by the keeper, she even tried to continue on after the tackle but was eventually given the penalty and dispatched it perfectly into the bottom left corner. Els was tough on herself today for absolutely no reason, she done exactly what I asked for, she took continuous shots and the defence had no idea how to deal with it. She loves a game against Minehead and rounded off her birthday weekend well with even more than a hattrick, hopefully there's even more to come.
